We all go through times in our life when we’re not exactly the happiest people. Our life may not have changed at all, but we just aren’t as excited to be alive.
The good news is its completely normal to go through mood swings. It becomes a problem when it starts to interrupt your life. For example, you can’t work, you don’t find enjoyment in things that you normally do, or you feel ill. If this is happening, you may need to speak to your physician to find out if you are suffering from depression.
If you don’t feel as though the depression is affecting your life or well-being, there are ways to lift your mood easily and quickly.
Jump Up and Down
You may think this is silly, but it’s actually effective. Not only does jumping up and down feel funny, but it gets your heart rate up, which can release endorphins. Those are the feel good hormones you get when you exercise.
Can’t jump up and down – do something else that’s physical. You can walk or ride a bike, if that is easier for you. Just be active, so you can get your body to help you feel happier.
Laugh
Yes, laugh. You likely don’t feel like laughing, but that’s the best part of this exercise. Research has found if you laugh or smile, it will improve your mood. So, you can be sad or anger, but if you laugh and smile, you will start to feel better.
Can’t crack a smile or laugh when there’s nothing to react that way too? Put in a favorite movie or watch the comedy channel. You will likely find something to amuse you enough to lift your spirits.
Write
Sometimes, the reason we’re sad is because we have too much going on in life and we don’t know how to control it all. The best to release some of that confusion is by writing everything down. As you write, you’ll likely come up with solutions to help you solve your problems.
If you don’t know what to write, go ahead and just start writing whatever comes to mind. You can even write “I don’t know what to write.” This will likely propel you into some other thoughts you can write down. It’s always interesting to see what ends up on paper, and how it relates to how you’re feeling.
Sleep
Sleep deprivation is one of the many reasons people don’t feel happy. If you’re having a hard time sleeping at night, try to take naps during the day. It’s also a good idea to start to work on your sleep schedule. Start a bedtime routine to get your body and mind ready for a restful night sleep. This can include reading, listening to soft music, and having non-caffeinated tea. Whatever you decide, do it every night before bed to let your body and mind know it’s time to rest.
Talk
Talking is such a good way to lift your mood. Just like writing, talking can help you get out all of that tension you have inside of you. Through this talking you can figure out problems and understand your situation better.
While friends and family are good people to talk to, you may not trust them completely to divulge a lot of what you want to discuss. For this reason, there’s personal consulting. With a personal consultant, you don’t have to worry about what you’re saying. You can tell a personal consultant anything, and be sure that he will keep all of your secrets secure. You don’t have to be worried you’re being judged or criticized. A personal consultant is like your best friend who you never have to worry about getting an argument with because he or she will tell all of your secrets.
