Caregiving from a Distance – How to Stay Connected

caregivingNot all adult children can be close to their aging parents. These adult children go through a lot of guilt. The truth is that you don’t have to feel guilty because there’s a lot you can do from a distance. Just because you aren’t next to your parent, it doesn’t mean that you can’t help him or her.

Reach Out to Support Services

The reason there are support services available is because of situations like the one you and your aging parents are in right now. They provide the help they need when family members are not available. This is not something you should feel guilty about. You are taking care of your parents when you set up these services. You don’t have to do them yourself. All you need to do is make sure they are taken care of. Call around your parents’ community to find support services such as Meals on Wheels, transportation, and outings. Usually, they will pick up your parents, take them to appointment, bring them food, and even help them take care of themselves. Most communities everything that your parents need. You just have to look for them.

Call Often – Visit When Possible

Most older parents simply want to talk to you. They don’t necessarily need to see you while talking. Calling one or more times a day is a good idea. You can check in to make sure they need anything. You can also just discuss what they have on their minds. It’s great for senior health to vent whatever is going on inside of their minds.

When it’s possible for you, visit your aging parents. They will look forward to these times of spending quality time with you. Taking just a couple days out of your busy schedule will make them very happy. It will also make you happy to know that you are setting time aside for the people who have done so much for you.
