Clients often come to me expressing how down in the dumps they are, and they don’t have any reason for it. They say that they were feeling great for a while, but then something happened inside of them and their mood just went downhill. Now, they are unmotivated, fatigued, and just don’t have the energy to deal with daily activities.
Since I’m a personal consultant and not a psychiatrist or physician, my job isn’t to diagnose people. I just help them through life when emotions and situations seem to be a little too much to handle.
When I have cases such as this one, I immediately start asking questions such as:
- Do you have feelings of harming yourself or others?
- Have you been feeling this way for more than two weeks?
- Is it interfering with work and relationships?
- Have you lost interest in your usual activities?
- Are you eating more?
- Are you eating less?
- How are you sleeping?
- Can you concentrate on things that used to be easy to focus on?
Usually, when I ask these questions, I have a pretty good idea if I have to refer my client to a medical professional. This doesn’t mean I can’t work with the person, but it does mean the person needs to have some other help in addition to mine.
Once the person has met with a medical professional, my personal consulting sessions help them deal with the symptoms they are currently experiencing. Many people simply want to talk through their problems. They want to voice them because getting them out of their head is relief enough to carry on with their day, despite the symptoms they are experiencing because of their depression.
How It Helps
Those struggling with clinical depression (the type that comes up with no overt cause) need support. Their main problem in life is their depression, which then ends up affecting other parts of their life causing more problems. By helping people deal with the depression, they are less likely to have to deal with other problems too.
For some people, their lack of motivation is the biggest issue. They don’t have any strength inside of them to get up and get moving. They just don’t feel like doing anything.
To help this motivation issue, it can help to come up with something that NEEDS to be done. This task should be written down and a valiant effort should be put forth to complete it. Every day the task is completed, it deserves a check mark. Rewards can even be used for encouragement. This helps a lot of people move forward.
After completing one task every day successfully, you can move on to other ones slowly adding to each day. Now, this is in addition to other needed tasks such as going to work.
The hope is that by showing yourself you can push towards a goal and achieve it, you’ll be motivated to do it again and again. This is what can push you out of the rut you’re feeling from your depression.
