New Year's resolutions to improve your health

New Year’s Resolutions to Improve Your Health

When you are deciding on life changes, opt for New Year’s resolutions to improve your health. Making your wellness a priority is a key step in becoming and staying healthy, for senior citizens and individuals of every age.

Eat Nutritious Foods

While you may not need as many calories as you get older, it is still important to eat foods that give your body the nutrients it needs. Choose a rainbow of colors for your produce choices. This can include greens such as spinach and broccoli, oranges such as carrots and cantaloupes, and purples of cabbages and eggplants. Five servings of fruit and vegetables is recommended, pair these with whole grains, heart-healthy fats, and low-fat dairy.

Keep Moving

It is important to keep up physical activity, even if you are not as physically fit when you were younger. If you are worried about finding an activity that is right for you, talk to your doctor about options such as Tai Chi and stretching classes. If walking is something you love, even having regular walks with a friend in your community can be beneficial to your health.

Get Enough Sleep

While a good night’s sleep can become more difficult to secure as we age, it is not any less important. Resting your body and mind is a cornerstone of health, at every age. Make your rest a priority when making New Year’s resolutions to improve your health.

After all, stumbles and falls can be an issue for older adults and sleep deprivation can impact coordination. It is beneficial for your immune system and cognitive thinking, too.

Talk Through Your Problems

Talking through problems is a path to solutions. It is estimated that depression or anxiety is experienced by 1 in 5 older adults. With statistics like these, it’s important to take notice of periods of sadness or irritability in yourself and the people you love. If you suspect you or someone you care for could use a patient ear, reach out for counseling.

When you work with Van Blarcom Consulting, know that Kendall offers House-Calls, an opportunity for you or your loved one to participate in counseling within the comfort of their own home. This is appreciated by many senior citizens.

See Your Provider

Your mental health and physical health work in tandem to create a productive, enjoyable life. When making New Year’s resolutions to improve your health, remember to focus on whole body wellness.

So, just as you seek counseling when you are feeling blue, be sure to schedule annual wellness visits. These yearly check ins are a way to stay on top of screening tests and any changes or adjustments that might be needed in lifestyle or medication. When it comes to health problems and medical advice, be sure to discuss your concerns with your doctor. A professional healthcare provider is who you should turn to discuss symptoms and medications.
